news archive Ooh la la! Target staff race to France
and raise £1,200 for Sue Ryder Care

THEY hitched a lift on a Cheltenham dustcart, rode a tractor on the beach, and blagged their way into France.

And at the end of 30 hours, the two teams from Target who staged a charity getaway came home with more than £1,200.

The aim was to get as far away as possible in 30 hours in support of Sue Ryder Care's Big Wigs 30:30 Challenge.

Armed with bags of enthusiasm and just £25 per team, the six began their jaunt from Target's offices in Painswick Road, Cheltenham.

Team Blue got off to a flying start. Thanks to Airport Priority Cars in Cheltenham, Rachel Worthing, Bev Ryder-Jones and Sam Kandiyali had a free ride to Heathrow by 11am.

"We couldn't get a flight with any airline – it was hopeless, so we went to Victoria Coach Station which was just as bad," said Rachel.

"We were running out of options when a really nice man gave us three free bus tickets to Dover."

The trio scored a coup with free ferry tickets to France. They ended up in Lille, after sneaking on to a train and shaking Sue Ryder tins at unsuspecting French lorry drivers.

"It was a surreal weekend. Travelling with no tickets was harder than we thought," said Rachel.

The Red Team (Natasha Neal, Bethan Simkins and Aaron McCarthy) got stuck in Bristol, having been turned down by airlines, trains, buses and taxis, before finally cadging a lift to Weston-super-Mare.

"We realised we weren't going to win on distance, so we decided to be as quirky as possible and raise the most money," said Bethan.

"We got a tractor ride on the beach, and even MP Martin Horwood gave us a lift and donation. But I don't think we'll try hitching on the M32 again in a hurry."

They were rescued from Bristol by MD of Target PR Sarah Bryars. "We're very proud of them all," she said.

She thanked everyone who sponsored the Target teams, and who offered lifts including INA support officer Keith Peacey, Martin Horwood, Derek Hyett from the EESI Group, Bristol Honda, Bristol Airport Flyer, HA Fox, Airport Priority Cars and Gullivers Sports Travel.

The Sue Ryder Big Wigs Challenge seeks to generate £30,000 in its 30th year of providing hospice care at Cheltenham.
