Following another hugely successful golf day which raised more than £7,300 for Maggie’s Cheltenham last month, we thought we’d take a look back at the five previous Target Golf Days.

What started as a one-off event to celebrate Target’s 40th birthday in 2017 has now become a staple of our fundraising calendar. A great opportunity to invite clients, friends of the business and suppliers along to help with our fundraising efforts and enjoy themselves at the same time. Over the years we’ve also been very lucky with the weather too, only ever having intermittent showers – somewhat of an achievement given the unpredictability of the British summer!

All six golf days have been held at Brickhampton Court Golf Complex, with teams taking to the greens and fairways to try and win the coveted Target Claret Jug. There are also plenty of other opportunities to win prizes for titles such as ‘Best Dressed Golfer’ and competitions for nearest the pin, beat the pro and the longest drive.

Our most recent golf day was held on Thursday 25 May and was a big success thanks to the 16 teams who took part, all our sponsors and everyone involved on the day, who helped us to raise £7,314 for Maggie’s Cheltenham. Our newly nominated charity, they provide vital support and advice to people living with cancer and their loved ones that are free at the point of access. It’s an organisation that has supported a number of our own team members too, so we know first-hand how valuable the service is.

But let’s cast our minds back to 2017 and the first Target Golf Day which supported WellChild. Initially intended to be a standalone event, the day was a huge triumph, with McColl Marketing becoming the first Target Golf Day champions, raising more than £5,000 in the process for the national UK children’s charity which is based in Cheltenham.

Such was the success of the day that we decided to make it an annual event, with 2018 once again raising money for Well Child. This time it was Willans who took home the Target Claret Jug, while Frocester Group were victorious in 2019. Over the three years, we raised in excess of £13,000 for Well Child.

From 2020 to 2022, we supported Hope for Tomorrow, a Gloucestershire-based charity that provides cancer treatment closer to patients’ homes, across the UK, thanks to their Mobile Cancer Care Units. Due to Covid, sadly we weren’t able to host the golf day in 2020, but 2021 saw a return to events, with social distancing in place. A day of keen competition and fun saw the Brace Creative team win the Target Claret Jug and we raised more than £7,000 in the process. Last year saw our three years of support for Hope for Tomorrow come to an end and we signed off by raising a spectacular £9,000, thanks to the 21 teams of golfers competing, with Bevans taking home the silverware.

In total, the six Target Golf Days have raised more than £39,000 for charity, a figure we’re extremely proud of. While it’s a team effort to organise and ensure everything runs smoothly on the day, the event wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of our Chairman, Colin Spencer and Office Manager, Bev Ryder-Jones. We’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone that has supported us over the years, we wouldn’t have been able to raise such a fantastic amount without your generosity.
